Key Responsibilities
As a special education teacher, you’ll play a vital role in creating inclusive learning environments. Your day-to-day duties will include:
- Conducting assessments to identify students’ strengths, abilities, and areas where they need extra support.
- Crafting and implementing personalized Individualized
- Education Plans (IEPs) in partnership with multidisciplinary teams, including specialists and administrators.
- Contributing actively to the local special education committee to shape policies and programs.
- Designing engaging, adapted lessons and instructional approaches that meet individual student needs.
- Incorporating a variety of teaching strategies, tools, and resources to make learning accessible and enjoyable.
- Building strong partnerships with parents, guardians, tutors, fellow teachers, and support staff to provide consistent guidance and encouragement.
- Regularly tracking student progress, adjusting strategies as needed, and celebrating achievements to foster growth and confidence.
- Maintaining accurate, comprehensive records of student development, challenges, and accomplishments.
- Keeping up-to-date with the latest research, methods, and best practices in special education through ongoing learning.
- Engaging in professional development opportunities, workshops, and training sessions.
What We Are Looking For
To succeed in this position, you’ll need:
- A bachelor’s degree in special education, general education, or a related field.
- A valid teaching certification, such as a “Brevet d’enseignement,” teaching permit, or provisional permit in
- Quebec (or an equivalent from another Canadian province).
A master’s degree in special education is considered a strong asset.
In line with priorities under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (learn more at the Government of Canada’s official page), we may flexibly consider or waive certain qualifications for qualified candidates who are beneficiaries of the agreement and are willing to participate in a board-approved training program.
Essential Requirements
- Strong proficiency in the language of instruction (English, French, or Inuktitut).
Compensation and Benefits
We offer competitive compensation in accordance with the Teachers’ Collective Agreement:
- Annual salary ranging from $46,527 to $92,027, based on your experience and qualifications.
